This paper presents the design and analysis of a low-profile multistage current-controlled switched-capacitor (SC) step-down dc/dc converter. The converter not only exhibits all advantages of classical SC converters, but also features good regulation capability and continuous input current waveform, resulting in low conducted electromagnetic interference with the supply network. The concept of energy transfer is achieved by paralleling the input and output of two step-down converter cells and operating them in antiphase. The voltage conversion ratio is determined by controlling the charging trajectories of the capacitors in each cell. As the circuit is unnecessary to use any inductive elements, possibilities of integrated circuit fabrication and high power density are promising. By applying the state-space averaging technique, a third-order state-space model for an n-stage converter is derived. Static and small-signal dynamic behaviors of the converter are investigated. A 70-W 48-V/12 V converter is implemented. Analytical predictions are verified with experimental measurements. A switched‐capacitor transformer is a coil‐less transformer in which stepping‐up and ‐down of voltage is handled by switching the connections between capacitors alternately into series and parallel. This paper demonstrates that a low‐power coil‐less power supply can be created with these transformers. the proposed circuit has the following features: (1) High efficiency, comparable to that of a switching regulator, can be obtained easily. (2) Because of its coil‐less construction, it can be made small and light. Hybrid integration is also possible. (3) Coil‐less construction significantly reduces generation of magnetic fields. the operating principle is first shown for the circuit with ideal elements. State equations are then derived in which the on‐resistance of the switch element is considered, and these are numerically analyzed. an SC transformer with a transformer ratio of 1/2 and an SC dc‐dc converter with an output voltage regulator already have been constructed with discrete components. Results of the average output voltage and efficiency have been confirmed numerically by experiments on constructed circuits. A comparison of the above two circuits demonstrates that although the latter has an efficiency of about 80% (which is lower than that of the former), both have less than ±0.06% in input‐output variation. the voltage variation is at most ‐0.16% for the temperature variation of −20° ∼ 80°.

The switched capacitor (SC) circuit has been applied to analog signal processing, but few reports have been made on the application to power circuit. Recently, a report has been made on the dc‐dc converter using the SC circuit, but the circuit still has a number of problems, e.g., the loss due to the switching element or equivalent resistance of the SC circuit, the output ripple and the noise. From such a viewpoint, this paper presents first the theoretical and experimental investigations on the energy loss, energy transmission efficiency and output power of the dc‐dc converter using the basic SC circuit. Based on that result, dc‐dc converters are considered using a series‐parallel switching SC circuit with more than one capacitor. It is seen as a result that the loss due to the equivalent resistance is inevitable, even if ideal switching elements or capacitors are used in those SC circuits. As a means to cope with this problem, the dc‐dc converter using a new SC circuit is proposed, where the zero‐voltage switching mechanism is employed using a high‐frequency supply and the peak‐detector circuit. It is shown theoretically that the loss due to the equivalent resistance is not produced in principle in the proposed SC circuit. A result of experiment is shown with a drastic improvement.
