SWNT-Filled Thermoplastic and Elastomeric Composites Prepared by Miniemulsion Polymerization

Abstract: SWNT-filled polystyrene (SWNT-PS) and styrene−isoprene (SWNT-SI) composites prepared by miniemulsion polymerization showed distinctive physical features such as uniform black coloration, high solubility in toluene as well as in tetrahydrofuran (THF), and semiconductor to ohmic electrical behavior. Raman spectra for both hybrid materials suggested a reduced vibrational freedom of the polymer chains as a consequence of the nanotube incorporation. An adsorbed polymer layer on the nanotube bundles contributes to a… Show more

“…Coulombic or hydrophobic attraction plays a key role in achieving stable colloidal systems in ionic or non-ionic surfactants, respectively [22][23][24]. In general, there are three basic principles for dispersing fine particles in water [25]: (1) repulsion between the particles with their zeta potentials, (2) steric hindrance of the adsorption layer and (3) reduction of hydrophobic linkages among dispersed particles.…”

“…The carboxyl group-decorated DWNT solution exhibited strong PL peaks, which are assigned to the inner tubes with chiralites (10,2), (8,3), (7,5) and (6,5). After attaching phenylisocyanate groups, the individualized species were changed to the large sized tubes having the inner tubes with chiralites (10,2), (9,4) and (8,6). This result strongly indicates the possibility for the diameter- Fig.…”

“…Therefore, many researches on covalent and noncovalent modification of CNT have been made to realize the well dispersion of individual nanotubes and establish a strong chemical affinity with the surrounding polymer matrix [6][7][8]. The noncovalent approaches include surfactant modification [9][10][11][12][13][14], polymer wrapping, [15,16] and polymer absorption [17,18]. The covalent functionalization of CNT is usually realized by grafting polymer or long alkyl chains onto CNT [19][20][21][22][23].…”
