This article aims to describe the sufismtrought of SyihabuddinAekLibung (Nasution), born in South Tapanuli. He was one of the scholars (al-‘Alim al-‘Allamah) in Archipelago, pupil of Abdul Jabar al-KhalidiNaqsyabandi (Khalifah of Ibrahim al-Khalidi) and Muhammad Ali Ridha in Mecca. This article is based on the sources of his manuscript, Adab al-Muridin and Fath al-Qalb with a philological approach and social history. Syihabuddin said that the pillars of the religion are 4 types: iman, Islam, tauhid, and makrifah. It means that religion was not only iman, Islam (sharia, fiqh), dantauhid, but also makrifat (sufism, tarekat and suluk). The understanding and implementation makrifah, of course, must be preceded by the understanding and implementation of the iman, Islam and tauhid. This understanding is the understanding of the scholars who are rapprochement or reconciliation between shari’ah-oriented scholars and sufis who prefer the esoteric teachings. Abstrak: Tradisi Intelektual Ulama Mandailing di Sumatera Timur: Zainal Arifin Abbas, 1912-1979. Studi ini meneliti biografi, karya, gagasan dan kontribusi Zainal Arifin Abbas di Sumatera Timur. Pemikiran pendidikan Zainal Arifin Abbas di Sumatera Timur dipengaruhi oleh orang tua, guru, kolega hingga orang-orang yang ada di sekelilingnya. Studi ini meneliti biografi dan kontribusi Zainal Arifin Abbas dalam tradisi dan dinamika intelektual di Sumatera Timur. Melalui metode sosiologis-historis, temuan penelitian ini yaitu Zainal Arifin Abbas telah berkontribusi signifikan dalam bidang pendidikan. Melalui keteladanan, ia berhasil menjadi pendidik yang arif, pengagas berdirinya madrasah modern, serta penulis produktif. Ia senantiasa menunjukkan semangat dalam menuntut ilmu, mengintegrasikan ilmu, memuliakan guru, dan senantiasa memberikan pemahaman tentang urgensi pendidikan ibadah kepada masyarakat. Ia juga seorang organisatoris dan pejuang kemerdekaan Indonesia.Kata Kunci: Mandailing, Ulama, Sumatera Timur, Zainal Arifin AbbasAbstract: The Intellectual Tradition of Mandailing Ulama in East Sumatra: Zainal Arifin Abbas, 1912-1979. This study examines the biography, works and contributions of Zainal Arifin Abbas in East Sumatra. The intellectual activity of Zainal Arifin Abbas’s in East Sumatra is influenced by parents, teachers, colleagues and those around him. This study examines the biography and contribution of Zainal Arifin Abbas in tradition and intellectual dynamics in East Sumatra. Applying a sociological-historical method, this study establishes that Zainal Arifin Abbas have indeed contributed very significantly in the field of education. Through his personal example, he managed to become a wise educator, initiator of the founding of the modern madrasa, and at the same time a prolific writer. He always showed enthusiasm in studying, integrating knowledge, glorifying teachers, and always giving an understanding of the urgency of religious education to the community. Abstrak: Studi ini membahas tradisi menulis ilmuwan Muslim Nusantara sejak zaman kerajaan hingga masa kontemporer. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan historis, peneliti mengajukan temuan bahwa aktor utama dalam penyebaran ajaran Islam dilakukan oleh ulama dengan menuangkan ide-ide mereka dalam karya-karya tulis. Karya-karya tersebut sebagian berbentuk naskah dalam berbagai cabang ilmu pengetahuan seperti tasawuf, fikih, tauhid, sejarah bahkan sains. Keberadaan naskah-naskah tersebut menggambarkan tingginya kualitas intelektual ilmuwan Muslim Nusantara. Fenomena menulis di kalangan ilmuwan Muslim (ulama) ternyata tidak berhenti di satu periode saja. Ilmuwan Muslim yang lahir belakangan juga secara sadar melanjutkan tradisi yang telah ditanamkan oleh para pendahulu. Kata Kunci: ilmiah, tulisan, manuskrip, ulama, Nusantara Abstract: Scientific Dimension of Muslim Scholars in Nusantara. This study discusses the writing inclination of Nusantara Muslim scholars from the imperial era to the contemporary period. Using a historical approach, the researcher proposes the finding that the main actors in the dissemination of Islamic teachings are carried out by scholars by expressing their ideas in written works. The works are partly in the form of manuscripts in various branches of science, such as Sufism, Jurisprudence, monotheism, history and even science. The existence of these texts illustrates the high quality of intellectual Muslim archipelago scientists. The author insists that the phenomenon of writing among Muslim scientists (scholars) has even gone beyond just one period. Muslim scholars who were born in the succeeding period also consciously continued the tradition that had been instilled by their predecessors.
