Symbolic Representation of Anatomical Knowledge: Concept Classification and Development Strategies

Abstract: In this paper a novel approach to anatomy knowledge representation is described. The focus of the present research has been on the development of a representational framework where the conceptual level has been implemented by using hierarchical and nonhierarchical conceptual networks. This has allowed handling the demand for multiple views of anatomy (systemic and topographical views). The terminological level of the knowledge representation has been implemented by using a compositional strategy which has avoi… Show more

“…This can effectively enhance the student's anatomical understanding and memory. Moreover, the construction and instantiation of anatomical knowledge ontology contributes to the semantic association of anatomical terms, concepts, physiological functions, and morphological structures, which enables the organic integration of various kinds of anatomical knowledge, ensuring the integrity and systematization of knowledge expression [20][21][22].…”

“…From that moment Digital Anatomy became an effective research theme and remarkable results have been obtained, e.g. a novel approach to anatomy knowledge representation [5] and a Dynamic Histogram Viewer (DHV), which is an on-line virtual threedimensional immersive environment to navigate through colorimetric characterization of the Visible Human Dataset (VHD) cryosectional crosssection color images [6], [7].…”
