Symmetric and asymmetric effects of financial development on carbon dioxide emissions in Nigeria: Evidence from linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag analyses

Abstract: This study examines the impact of financial development on carbon dioxide emissions in Nigeria over the period 1971–2014. Income per capita, energy consumption, exchange rate and urbanization are incorporated in the analysis. The empirical analysis based on linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag techniques provides evidence of long-run relationship among the variables in Nigeria. The results in general show that financial development has significant asymmetric effects on carbon dioxide em… Show more

“…The significance of LD + at 1% with value −2.5040 is explained by the nonlinear relationship between CO 2 emission and lockdown. The CO 2 emission decreases due to strict lockdown in India during pandemic spread (Azam et al, 2020 ; Mohsin, Naiwen, et al, 2020 ; Mohsin, Naseem, et al, 2020 ; Omoke et al, 2020 ). As per the graphical presentation, the CO 2 emission started decreasing from the starting point of COVID-19 breakout because people stayed in their homes to avoid the risk of viruses.…”

“…e behavior of environmental protection is also called environmental lowcarbon behavior and environmental protection behavior in China [1][2][3]. At present, the research of environmental protection awareness by experts within the industry mainly focuses on the in uence of demographic factors such as the age, education level, and birth environment of citizens, as well as subjective environmental ecological education, environmental attitude, and environmental protection awareness or from the perspective of tourism motivation.…”

“…The study did not include market capitalization over GDP, a comprehensive indicator of the financial sector that measures the volume of liquidity given to the economy by the stock market and other financial institutions. Additionally, Lorember et al (2020) and Omoke et al (2020) only conducted examinations that covered the years 1971 through 2014 and 1990, respectively; they did not extend their coverage to 2020. The novelty of this study is ascertaining the moderating role of financial development on the relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and economic growth in Nigeria by assessing the marginal effect of CO2 emissions on economic growth at different levels of financial development.…”
