Symmetrization, Mirroring and External Reality: An ‘Inner’ Perspective

Abstract: In the last two decades, mirroring systems have been detected in the monkey and in the human brain. The mirroring mechanisms have been considered as the neural basis for social cognition and interpersonal reactivity, and they have been assumed to support imitation, sharing of emotional states and empathy. Here I would like to compare ‘mirroring phenomena’ to ‘symmetrization phenomena’. In psychoanalytic literature, the construct of symmetrization has been proposed in the context of the Bi-Logic theory by Matte… Show more

“…In our proposed theory of judgement, where the spin model is allowed to be summarized by Equation (11), the real coefficient α = 0 in the equation itself allows us to keep into account the infinitary aspect of the mental life. Significantly, this is different from what the cognitive theories, based on explicit cognitive representations, can perform (see [1]). Namely, a judgement is enabled to include the whole mental life.…”

“…Hence, our model requires infinite singletons. We now see how to conceive them by considering the above definition (1). Let us first consider a singleton given in the standard way, for example, the singleton V = {u}.…”

“…The detection of the default mode network (DMN) as a functional brain network active when individuals are undisturbed or carry out an undirected mental task (e.g., mind-wandering or daydreaming, thinking about their individual plans/memories) led to attempts to apply this finding to traditional psychodynamic views. DNM is active during mental processes that overlap with and constitute the concept of the Ego ( Carhart-Harris and Friston, 2010 ; Rizzolatti et al, 2014 ; Lauro-Grotto, 2021 ). DNM is also active when dreaming.…”

“…In general, developing a further analysis of the logical role of infinite singletons could allow reaching the formalisation of other aspects of the Freudian theory. In fact, the overwhelming power of symmetry in the model should be somehow limited (Saad, 2020;Lauro Grotto, 2021) to reproduce the mixture of conscious and unconscious processes that is typical of human thinking, as described by Matte Blanco in the Bi-logic approach.
