Symptomatology and Clinic of Hydronephrosis Associated With Uretero Pelvic Junction Anomalies

Abstract: The most common cause of hydronephrosis in the pediatric age group is ureteropelvic junction-type hydronephrosis (UPJHN). Since the advent of widespread maternal ultrasound screening, clinical presentation of hydronephrosis associated with UPJ anomalies has changed dramatically. Today most cases are diagnosed in the prenatal period, and neonates present without signs or symptoms. For those who are not detected at birth, UPJHN eventually presents throughout childhood and even adulthood with various symptoms. Cl… Show more

“…Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), classified as congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) with an obstructive pattern, constitutes the most important etiology of hydronephrosis and also one of the common causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children. Severe UPJO is associated with obstruction to urine flow from the renal pelvis to the ureter and can result in ultimately complete loss of the involved kidney [ 9 ].…”

“…In the context of symptomatology of UPJO, pain response, correlated with the extent of pyelocaliceal system dilatation, is relatively rare, particularly among younger children [8]. On the contrary, in older children with hydronephrosis the pain in the lumbar or midabdominal region occurs more frequently.…”
