Synchronization and Coherence as an Organizing Principle in the Organism, Social Interaction, and Consciousness

Abstract: The hypothesis that the synchronization and coherence of body systems and of the body's electromagnetic fields may be an important organizing principle in the organism is presented. A summary of early insights on synchronization and coherence in the organism is followed by the presentation of recent findings in neurobiology and other disciplines on synchronization within and between physiological systems and on interpersonal synchronization and coherence in social psychology and social neurobiology. This leads… Show more

“…Others are beginning to recognize the importance of synchronous coherence in psychology, although these models may not have grasped the proper mechanisms and functional importance of "electromagnetic fields" in the brain and body (Bischof, 2008;Manzalini, 2010). They have usually been described as "bioelectric" effects (Burr, 1939) that are typically considered to be primarily a byproduct or a reflection of some cognitive and biological processes.…”

“…Evidence from neurophysi ologic correlates support this assertion with specific regard to significantly decreased breath rate, associated with the relaxation response and releasing o f the individual self to the universal world (Benson, 1996;Iyengar, 2005;Judith, 2004), as well as decreased delta and beta bandwidth activity, which is generally associated with enhanced consciousness and suspension of critical thought respectively (Thompson & Thompson, 2004). The other neurophysiologic correlates of the experiential descriptions consistently pointed to an individually diverse yet collec tively synchronistic process characterized by a coherent, relaxed and alert state of waking consciousness (Bischoff, 2008;Csikszentmihalyi, 1990;McCraty & Atkinson, 2003;Wilber, 2000). Participants collectively described uMoya consciousness in absolute, relative, immanent, transcendent, interior, exterior, ascending, descending, spiralling, empowering, enlightening, enveloping, emerging, fulfilling, uplifting, intuitive, imaginative, energetic, cognitive, emotional and sensual terms.…”

“…Clasp electrodes were placed on each ear lobe with one open cup electrode located in the area between the somatosensory and motor cortex (Cz). This region was selected as it has been implicated in the experience of "flow" (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) and sense o f coherence (Antonovsky, 1987;Bischoff, 2008). In addition, an emWave2 apparatus, attached to one ear and linked to a laptop computer, gave readings of heart rate variability, time elapsed, as well as low, medium and high levels of physiological coherence.…”
