Synchronous Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor and Primary Lung Adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Although rare, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The asynchronous occurrence of other malignancies in patients with GIST during the clinical course is relatively common. However, the synchronous coexistence of GIST and lung cancer has only rarely been reported. We experienced a case of coincidental primary lung adenocarcinoma and intestinal GIST. The present case is not only of interest due to the rare coincidence of GIST and lung cance… Show more

“…[ 10 ] One patient received targeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors treatment for SCLC and a gastric stromal tumor but died after 11 months. [ 2 ] The median survival for patients with limited-stage disease is currently 15 to 20 months, with 20–40% surviving to 2 years, and for those with extensive-stage disease, the values are 8 to 13 months and 5%, respectively. [ 11 ] Surgery is traditionally the first-line therapy for the management of gastric DLBCL.…”

“…Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive disease that accounts for about 13% of lung cancer cases. [ 1 ] Although cases of synchronous lung cancer with other organ malignancies are relatively common, [ 2 5 ] cases of synchronous SCLC with other carcinomas are rarely reported. [ 6 ] Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the stomach has been reported to be observed in 45–50% of all cases of gastric lymphoma.…”

“…The synchronous occurrence of GIST and other primary gastrointestinal malignancies has been reported previously (5 -13). However, the synchronous occurrence of lung cancer and GIST seems to be extremely rare (6)(7)(8). We experienced a case of advanced stage pulmonary adenocarcinoma associated with a rectal GIST.…”

“…This is particularly true for globally synchronous GIST tumors, which are often detected incidentally during diagnostic processes or treatment [ 12 ]. Moreover, those patients are frequently diagnosed with an asynchronous occurrence of another malignancy during follow-up to their treatment [ 13 ]. Those double or multiple coincidences of GIST are mainly observed with other primary gastrointestinal malignancies [ 14 ].…”
