“…45,55−57 As expected, normalized pre-edge peak height and area decreased with oxidation state in the reference materials following the order: Na 3 V V O 4 , 48-Fh > VO IV (OH) 2 , VO IV SO 4 ≫ V III Cl 3 (Table S3). On the basis of methods developed by Chaurand et al 56 , Levina et al 55 , and Bennett et al 45 , V oxidation states were estimated using a linear regression (R 2 = 0.980) of the normalized pre-edge peak area (Figure 2a; Table S4). The use of this approach on reference spectra yielded averaged oxidation states of +5.13 (Na 3 V V O 4 ), +4.95 (48-Fh), +3.96 (V IV O(OH) 2 ), +3.88 (V IV OSO 4 ), and +3.08 (V III Cl 3 ) for the reference materials (Table S3).…”

“…These works have typically established a functional relationship between the pre-edge peak amplitude (and/or the edge position) and the average V valence state. Other studies have used the linear combination fit (LCF) approach, whereby the experimental spectrum is modeled with weighed combinations of standards spectra [75][76][77][78][79][80][81]. Despite the different approaches in interpreting the data, the general consensus is that as long as the local atomic environment around V in the standards is representative of that in the studied samples, the use of such relationships or of LCFs produces similar results and is reliable in determining the V valence state [4].…”

“…All samples and standards were measured at the same beamline using the same experimental setup, which results in the same instrumental effects on all spectra. Previous V XANES work has highlighted the importance of comparing spectra measured with the same beamline and setup [75].…”
