Defined Sjögren's syndromes (defined by the presence of xerostomia, xerophthalmia, labial salivary gland histologic stages III or IV on the Chisholm scale, and anti-SSA or anti-SSB antibodies) are much rarer in HCV patients (38,(40)(41)(42). From the present series, however, we cannot rule out a stronger association between HCV and Sjögren's syndrome because our study did not focus on the presence of anti-extractable nuclear antigen antibodies or significant salivary gland abnormalities.…”

Although some authors (15, 16) have used unstimulated whole sialometry to evaluate salivary gland function in HCV infected patients, it has been suggested that the whole stimulated salivary flow rate could be especially useful in measuring salivary function in patients with common autoimmune disorders (17).
