Rising energy costs, losses in the present-day electricity grid, risks from nuclear power generation, and global environmental changes are motivating a transformation of the conventional ways of generating electricity. Globally, there is a desire to rely more on renewable energy resources (RERs) for electricity generation. RERs reduce green house gas emissions and may have economic benefits, e.g., through applying demand side management with dynamic pricing so as to shift loads from fossil fuel-based generators to RERs. The electricity grid is presently evolving towards an intelligent grid, the so-called smart grid (SG). One of the major goals of the future SG is to move towards 100% electricity generation from RERs, i.e., towards a 100% renewable grid. However, the disparate, intermittent, and typically widely geographically distributed nature of RERs complicates the integration of RERs into the SG. Moreover, individual RERs have generally lower capacity than conventional fossil-fuel plants, and these RERs are based on a wide spectrum of different technologies. In this article, we give an overview of recent efforts that aim to integrate RERs into the SG. We outline the integration of RERs into the SG along with their supporting communication networks. We also discuss ongoing projects that seek to integrate RERs into the SG around the globe. Finally, we outline future research directions on integrating RERs into the SG. Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly becoming more common and ownership is set to rise globally in coming years. The potential impacts of increased EVs on the electrical grid have been widely investigated and in its current state, existing grid infrastructure will struggle to meet the high demands at peak charging hours. The limited range of electric cars compounds this issue. We therefore propose CognitiveCharge, a novel approach to predictive and adaptive disconnection aware opportunistic energy discovery and transfer for the smart vehicular charging. CognitiveCharge detects and reacts to individual nodes and network regions which are at risk of getting depleted by using implicit predictive hybrid contact and resources congestion heuristics. CognitiveCharge exploits localised relative utility based approach to adaptively offload the energy from parts of the network with energy surplus to depleting areas with non-uniform depletion rates. We evaluate CognitiveCharge using a multi-day traces for the city of San Francisco, USA and Nottingham, UK to compare against existing infrastructure across a range of metrics. CognitiveCharge successfully eliminates congestion at both ad hoc and infrastructure charging points, reduces the time that a vehicle must wait to charge from the point at which it identifies as being in need of energy, and drastically reduces the total number of nodes in need of energy over the evaluation period.

<p>Este trabajo presenta el modelado y control completo del sistema Drive-by-Wire de un vehículo urbano eléctrico. Dicho sistema comprende el mecanismo de dirección, la aceleración y el freno del vehículo. El modelado se ha realizado empleando funciones de transferencia de bajo orden haciendo uso de modelos de “caja negra”. En lo referente al control, todos los controladores desarrollados son del tipo PID en sus distintas configuraciones. Los actuadores de corriente continua acoplados a la dirección y freno se controlan mediante un sistema de control en cascada mientras que la aceleración está controlada por un sistema de planificación de ganancias. El código del proyecto se encuentra disponible en la plataforma Github. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la validez de los modelos obtenidos, así como la eficacia de los controladores desarrollados.</p>
