Synergistic and antagonistic interactions of terpenes against Meloidogyne incognita and the nematicidal activity of essential oils from seven plants indigenous to Greece

Abstract: This is the first report on the activity of F. vulgare, P. anisum, E. meliodora and P. terebinthus, and additionally on synergistic/antagonistic nematicidal terpene interactions, against M. incognita, providing alternative methods for nematode control.

“…The percentages of dead/paralyzed nematodes observed in the microplate assays after 24 h were corrected by eliminating the natural death/paralysis (about 3%) in negative control according to the Schneider-Orelli formula (Ntalli et al, 2011): Adjusted mortality (%) = (Mortality in treatment -Mortality in negative control) ÷ (1 -Mortality in negative control) × 100…”

“…Other monoterpenes revealed a hierarchy of functional groups, phenols, aldehydes and primary alcohols being the most active followed by secondary and tertiary alcohols. Ntalli et al (2011b) analyzed the synergistic and antagonistic interactions between components from EOs active against Meloidogyne incognita, showing that combinations of nematicidal EO components, such has carvacrol/thymol or carvacrol/geraniol, had a synergistic activity on M. incognita J2 juvenile paralysis.…”
