Synergistic and antimicrobial properties of commercial turmeric (Curcuma longa) essential oil against pathogenic bacteria

Abstract: Several studies have shown the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of turmeric (Curcuma longa), widely used in food industry as a colorant, among other functions. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of turmeric essential oil against pathogenic bacteria and to study the influence of the addition of ascorbic acid on the prevention of polyphenols oxidation. The commercial turmeric essential oil alone did not show bactericidal activity against the microorganisms… Show more

“…Regarding the inactivity of the obtained essential oil against L. monocitogenes our results are in agreement with those obtained by Antunes and coworkers [36]. In order to increase the activity of the essential oil against these bacteria they added an antioxidant -ascorbic acid and observed their synergistic action.…”

“…Similar to our result, Essien, Newby, Walker, Setzer, and Ekundayo () have demonstrated strong antibacterial activity of turmeric leaf volatile oil against the gram positive organisms particularly B. cereus and S. aureus which this activity attributed to ar‐turmerone that is the major component of the volatile oil. Our results are in agreement with Antunes, Robazza, Schittler, and Gomes () results who reported that commercial turmeric volatile oil had not significant antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium .…”

“…With the dearth of novel antibiotics, traditional healers’ extracted Eos from TMP used for treatment of different illness [15]. The chemical composition of essential oils isolated by steam distillation contain varies bioactive compound that exhibited remarkable bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities [14, 16].…”
