Synergistic Behavior Between Zwitterionic Surfactant α‐Decylbetaine and Anionic Surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

Abstract: Here, we present experimental surface tension isotherms of mixed solutions of a zwitterionic surfactant a-decylbetaine (DB) and an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in different molar ratios. These mixed solutions show a composition dependency with respect to both surface tension effectiveness and critical micelle concentration. The pseudo-regular solution theory has been used to evaluate the interaction parameters in the micelle, b m and at the surface, b s . The results revealed that the mixed … Show more

“…Prior to the micellization, the adsorption of surfactant molecules, the so-called surface excess concentration (C t ) and the value of the mean molecular area (a m ) can be determined from the experimental data using the Gibbs adsorption isotherm equation [14]. Regular solution theory was used to predict the micelle compositions and fit the experimental data of the mixed micellization as explained in our previous work and in the literature [6,22,49,50].…”

“…It is commonly accepted that in today's detergent industry, zwitterionic surfactants have been much less produced and investigated in comparison to other classes of surfactants due to their higher production cost together with the fact that they account only for 5% of the total surfactant market [1][2][3]. Mostly, their behaviors are reported in association with ionic or nonionic surfactants [4][5][6][7]. Zwitterionic surfactants consist of two functional groups; one positively charged and one negatively charged, and are fascinating molecules because of their unique properties [8,9].…”

“…Such effect of the mixture is said to be synergistic. Synergism or antagonism properties are often exhibited due to mixtures of different types of surfactants [13][14][15][16][17]. The observed synergism can be referred to as nonideal mixing, whereas the antagonism property exhibits the repulsion between two surfactants and the CMC is higher than the expected.…”

“…The electric attraction between the anionic surfactant and cationic center in betaine functional group enhances the packing density of the surface-active species at the air-water interface (Li et al 2012;Wang et al 2013;Cui 2014). The higher packing density of surface-active complex at the foam water-air interface enhanced the stability of the AOS-LB foam in the presence of oil (Wang and Zhang 2010).…”
