Synergistic effect of hindered amine light stabilizers/ultraviolet absorbers on the plasticized PVC during photo‐irradiation

Abstract: Two kinds of piperidine derivatives including a low-molecular weight (Wt. 481, T770) and a highmolecular weight (Wt. 2000-3100, C944) hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are added singly or with ultraviolet absorbers (UVA) in combination to plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) samples. Digital photos, color changes, attenuated total refection-Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR), and mechanical properties are obtained to investigate the photostable effect of the light stabilizers on the plastici… Show more

“…Two types of piperidine derivatives with low-molecular-weight and a high molecular weight hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) that used with and without ultraviolet absorbers [(2-(2-hydroxy-3-tert-butyl-5methylphenyl)-5-chlorobenzotriazole) and (2hydroxy-4-(octyloxy) benzophenone)] inset to plasticized PVC specimens. PVC samples with HALS and UVA revealed excellent results (differences of color, mechanical properties, and FTIR) and show avoid discolouring and photo-oxidation due to irradiation [30].…”

“…The oxidation aging can hinder nucleophilic substitution or other reactions for re-/upcycling owing to the generation of oxygencontaining groups. 228,235,237 The addition of thermal stabilisers could prevent the photodegradation of PVC. 232 To accomplish application diversity, PVC contains multiple additives such as lubricants, impact-modifiers, flame retardants, reinforcing agents, stabilisers, fillers, colorants, antioxidants and plasticisers, which can be released during aging and affect further recycling processes 20,230,238,239 through the possible side-reactions or poisoning of catalysts.…”

“…The conventional plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is one of the most widely used plastics, but the migration of the low molecular plasticizer such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP) limits the lifetime of PVC [1, 2]. Nitrile rubber (copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, NBR) can be used as a macromolecular plasticizer which has better compatibility and antiextraction with PVC matrix.…”

“…The combination of two kinds of light stabilizers: HALS and UVA is common and effective in polymer systems such as polyolefins, [14, 15] wood‐plastics composites [16] and so on [17]. In our previous work, HALS and UVA have synergistic effect on the color change and maintaining of elongation at break of plasticized PVC [1].…”
