Synergistic Flame Retardant Effect of Barium Phytate and Intumescent Flame Retardant for Epoxy Resin

Abstract: Recently, widespread concern has been aroused on environmentally friendly materials. In this article, barium phytate (Pa-Ba) was prepared by the reaction of phytic acid with barium carbonate in deionized water, which was used to blend with intumescent flame retardant (IFR) as a flame retardant and was added to epoxy resin (EP). Afterward, the chemical structure and thermal stability of Pa-Ba were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively.… Show more

“…The recognized characteristic bands of phytic acid viz., O-P-O vibration band that appears at 1639 cm − 1 , and CH 2 stretching vibration band at 2844 cm − 1 , and the P-OH vibration was at 2820 cm − 1 [34]. Moreover, bands at 1091 and 975 cm − 1 which are assigned to asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of P-O-C [35].The disappearance of some bands in the FTIR spectra of HPP/Keratin and HPPBTCA/sericin as compared to PA, such as those at 2820 and 1247 cm -1 , proved that there is a chemical reaction that has taken place between PA and PE (structure 1) as well as PE and BTCA (structure 3).…”

“…Due to the ammability of ENR and PLA, it is an urgent challenge to improve their ame retardancy [15,16]. At present, the main strategy to improve the ame retardancy of polymers is to add ame retardants to the matrix, such as halogen additives [17,18], metal hydroxides [19,20], silicon compound ame retardants [21,22], intumescent ame retardants (IFRs) [23][24][25]. As far as these ame retardants are concerned, IFRs have received widespread attention because of their low smoke[26], low toxicity [27], high e ciency[28] and small addition [23].…”

“…In the 1980s, European countries and the United States of America discussed the toxicity and environmental issues posed by halogenated flame retardants, which promoted research on new flame retardants. The goals of low toxicity, halogen-free, and synergistic compounding have become the focus of flame-retardant research [5].…”
