Synergistic inhibition between the gemini surfactant and bromide ion for steel corrosion in sulphuric acid

Abstract: The inhibitive synergistic effect between a cationic gemini surfactant, 1,3-propane-bis(dimethyl dodecylammonium bromide) (12-3-12), and bromide ion for the corrosion inhibition of cold rolled steel in 0.5 mol L -1 H 2 SO 4 was investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The inhibition system composed by 12-3-12 and bromide ion is efficient. The adsorption mechanism of the 12-3-12 and bromide ion on steel in acidic medium is discussed on th… Show more

“…Special formulations are prepared based on synergistic effect. Thanks to that, the level of protection is higher, and very often due to synergism effect, less amount of surfactant is needed to protect the metal surface [193,[216][217][218][219]. The biggest consumption of corrosion inhibitors based on cationic gemini surfactants belongs to petrochemical industry.…”

“…This permits the development of a biofilm, a biologically active layer of different kinds of microbes as well as mucus that is the result of their metabolic activity. Biofilm creates a good medium for growing microbes and increases the rate of corrosion up to 10,000 times. , The biocorrosion mechanism can be explained on the premise that the biofilm comprises bacterial cells and extracellular polymeric substances (combination of proteins, polysaccharides, fats, and nucleic acids) that facilitate the attachment of bacterial cells to the surface, enhancing the rate of corrosion. The biofilm also involves inorganic sludge from water and/or corrosion products. , …”
