Synergistic Interactions in Microbial Biofilms Facilitate the Establishment of Opportunistic Pathogenic Fungi in Household Dishwashers

Abstract: Biofilms formed on rubber seals in dishwashers harbor diverse microbiota. In this study, we focussed on the microbial composition of bacteria and fungi, isolated from a defined area of one square centimeter of rubber from four domestic dishwashers and assessed their abilities to in vitro multispecies biofilm formation. A total of 80 isolates (64 bacterial and 16 fungal) were analyzed. Multiple combinations of bacterial isolates from each dishwasher were screened for synergistic interactions. 32 out of 140 test… Show more

“…They have very low metabolic requirements and slow growth, but they are often able to exploit extremely resilient nutrient sources (Selbmann et al, ; Moreno, Vicente & de Hoog, ). They tend to associate with biofilm‐forming bacteria to form extremely resistant microbial communities (Mori et al, ; Kirchhoff et al, ; Zupančič et al, ). Their morphology is quite variable, and many species are dimorphic.…”

“…The viral sequences generated from any sequencing approach are subjected to a general analytical workflow involving quality filtering, assembly, annotation, and diversity analyses. Many tools are available to perform this bioinformatic workflow [ 153 ], but few of these are designed to complete the full workflow. Moreover, careful understanding of the sequence databases searched in each workflow is necessary to know whether biases exist for particular virus types.…”

“…For example, it allows a protected growth, ensures a reduced diffusion rate of toxic components and strengthens the attachment and expansion capabilities of the existing community [14,15]. In addition, the occurrence of many different species at a given site might increase interspecies communication and cross-feeding and positively affect biofilm biomass [16,17]. For the consumer, however, washing machine biofilms are unpleasant, as they are causing a constant recontamination of laundry and regularly cleaned machine parts, malodour of machine and laundry, the formation of unaesthetic plaques and contribute to the corrosion of metallic components [7,9,18].…”
