Synergistic use of UAV and TLS data for precise rockfall monitoring over a hanging monastery

Abstract: The preservation of cultural heritage and landscapes, which are constantly endangered by man-made hazards and natural disasters (earthquakes, landslides, floods, fires, urbanization, etc.) is a strategic priority for humanity. Nowadays, remote sensing stands out as an important, innovative and cost-effective tool with great potentialities for the protection and monitoring of cultural heritage as well as the prevention of monuments and sites, due to non-invasiveness in such a vulnerable research objective. In t… Show more

“…The fusion of UAV and TLS data, in the conventional sense, refers to the combination of the two datasets through methods such as ICP algorithm registration, aiming to complement each other or improve the accuracy of data in certain areas [57,58]. This data fusion method is more suitable for small-scale UAV modeling and TLS data because both exhibit a relatively high accuracy, enabling them to be combined quite well.…”

“…The selected methods for assessing translational slide and fall threats to heritage sites were similar, mainly the geomorphological approach and survey and monitoring using geomatic techniques (Figure 7). Examples of selected methods are detailed geomorphological mapping, extensive field campaigns, UAV digital photogrammetry, and TLS surveys to investigate the landslide mechanisms and potential damage to heritage sites [64,[87][88][89][90][91][92][93]. A minority of case studies opted for index-based methods.…”

“…UAVs overlapping photos combined into mosaics using photogrammetric systems finally produce high-resolution orthophotos that can estimate the landscape evolution in an area 1 . These models provide evidences for landslide mapping, volumetric and morphometric calculations, or three-dimensional representations of the terrain sites 4 . The last years the extremely rapid development of the UAVs provide to the researchers a low cost / extremely flexible tool for the rapid assessment after natural hazards like storms, landslides, or earthquakes 5,6,7 .…”
