Synergistically-acting Enterocin LD3 and Plantaricin LD4 Against Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Pathogenic Bacteria

Abstract: The efficacy of antimicrobials is an important aspect during their applications in food and therapeutics. In this study, combination of two bacteriocins, enterocin LD3 and plantaricin LD4, was studied against two pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC25923 and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC13311 for increasing their potency and bactericidal activity. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of enterocin LD3 and plantaricin LD4 against Staph. aureus subsp… Show more

“…Most of the LAB bacteriocins are pore formers and interact with the cell membrane to kill the target bacteria through the dissipation of membrane potential and ATP efflux, leading to cell death. Thus, the bacteriocins of LAB may serve as an alternative to clinical antibiotics and can be applied to treat bacterial infections ( Pérez-Ramos et al., 2021 ; Sheoran and Tiwari, 2021 ; Li et al., 2022 ).…”

“…This study investigated the synergistic interactions between different bacteriocins, and organic acids, and/or reuterin. Previous studies have addressed the antimicrobial activity of bacteriocins in combination with other stressors such as organic acids ( 30 ), other bacteriocins ( 31 ), essential oils ( 32 , 33 ), cinnamon ( 34 ), and EDTA ( 35 ). However, these combinations are often designed arbitrarily and do not consider the specificities of the different compounds and, more particularly, their structure, the differences in their mechanisms of action, or their spectra of activity.…”

“…The bacteriocins of probiotic bacteria have gained importance due to their safe applications in foods, pharmaceuticals, veterinary and human medicines (Barcenilla et al 2021 ; Liu et al 2011 ; Sharma et al 2021 ; Somashekaraiah et al 2021 ). These are inhibitory to narrow and broad range of bacteria by reducing cell viability and affecting the metabolism of bacterial cells or toxin production (Chen et al 2021 ; Sheoran and Tiwari 2019 , 2020 ). Other mechanisms of probiotics action are competitive inhibition on intestinal epithelial surface by blocking the adhering sites of the intestinal epithelial surface and reduction in the pathogens interaction.…”
