Synergy Factors in the Analysis of Lamb Survival

Abstract: Survival is one of the most important traits in genetic improvement programmes in livestock. The objective of this study is to determine sex, inbreeding, and birth type effects as well as their interactions on birth survival in lambs of two breeds. Records of 6356 Polish Merino (PM) breed and 9143 Wielkopolska sheep (WS) were taken into the analysis. Relationships between survival and three binary variables (sex, inbreeding, type of birth) were estimated by the use of logistic regression. Interactions among th… Show more

“…Survival of lambs is a compound character affected by many various effects connected to weather conditions, management, lamb and ewe behaviour, and other environmental factors (Smith 1977;Christley et al 2003;Everett-Hincks et al 2005;Tomaszyk et al 2014;Aktaş et al 2015;Moraes et al 2016). Increasing lamb numbers raised per ewe in a given year would result in improved productivity of ewes.…”

“…Da Rè et al (2018) estimated the effects of inbreeding level and geographical zone on the survival of pygmy hippopotamus using logit and probit transformations. Tomaszyk et al (2014) used odds ratio estimation to investigate synergy between birth survival and effects of sex-inbreeding and sex-birth type interactions for lambs.…”
