“…Estuaries are spatially discrete habitats, often separated by ecophysiological boundaries, as well as geographical distance, which may limit gene flow (Cognetti & Maltagliati, 2000; Dawson, Staton & Jacobs, 2001). Currently, three recognized Paracorophium species ( Paracorophium excavatum , Paracorophium lucasi , and Paracorophium brisbanensis ) occur in New Zealand (Chapman et al ., 2002). Of these, P. brisbanensis is a recent introduction (originating from Australia) and, to date, has only been found in Tauranga Harbour (Stevens, Hogg & Chapman, 2002).…”

“…Of these, P. brisbanensis is a recent introduction (originating from Australia) and, to date, has only been found in Tauranga Harbour (Stevens, Hogg & Chapman, 2002). Both endemic species are euryhaline, occurring in fine organic sediments in the mid to upper tidal areas of sand or mudflats of harbours and inlets, as well as in regions of rivers and freshwater lakes (Chapman et al ., 2002).…”

“…Trichoptera is a taxonomically and ecologically diverse component of freshwater ecosystems (winterbourn 2004), and their larvae are often used as a primary indicator of water quality (Resh 1993). Species-level assignments are often impossible for larvae (e.g., wiggins 1996) and, similar to other aquatic arthropods, matching genders can be difficult (Chapman et al 2002;Zhou et al 2007). Accordingly, a molecular identification tool would greatly assist in providing accurate species designations (sensu Ahrens et al 2007;Johanson 2007).…”

“…P. helmsii occurs on both islands, from Canterbury and Greymouth to north of Auckland (Chapman 1993), but is primarily in coastal freshwaters, except in the Waikato River catchment where it occurs well inland. This inland occurrence of an otherwise coastal species is comparable to that of Paracorophium lucasi which is also coastal (but estuarine), though extending into inland freshwaters in the Waikato River system and the Rotorua lakes (Chapman et al 2002). The hypogean P.fragilis is present from Canterbury northwards in the South Island, but no hypogean phreatogammarids have been reported so far from the North Island (Fenwick 2000).…”
