Synoptic and dynamic characteristics of the depressions that affected the area of Cyprus during the winter of 2007–2008

Abstract: Abstract. The hydrological year 2007–2008 is the second drier in Cyprus since records are kept, for more than one hundred years. Since most of the rainfall is associated with depressions that affect the area during the cold months of the year, a study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of these synoptic-scale systems. The study comprises a statistical analysis of the synoptic and dynamic characteristics of the depressions that affected the area of Cyprus during the winter of 2007–2008.

“…Nicolaides et al, 2004a;Nicolaides et al, 2004b;Nicolaides, 2005) it is found that it does not comprise an exceptional case. It was a rather common system and its dynamic characteristics are similar to those of depressions affecting the area from the west direction (note that the vast majority of the depression affecting the area of the east Mediterranean are depressions from the west direction, see Nicolaides, 2005).…”

“…The cyclonic frequency over the area is significantly enhanced during the cold Correspondence to: K. Nicolaides (kleanthi@spidernet.com.cy) months. The synoptic, dynamic and energetic characteristics of other Mediterranean cyclones have also been examined elsewhere (Michaelides, 1987;Prezerakos and Michaelides 1989;Michaelides et al, 1999;Nicolaides et al, 2004a;Nicolaides et al, 2004b;Nicolaides, 2005;Nicolaides et al, 2006).…”

“…The area is also affected by depressions Correspondence to: K. Nicolaides (kleanthi@spidernet.com.cy) with intense baroclinic characteristics (El-Fandy, 1946;Kallos and Metaxas, 1980;Maheras et al, 2002). These depressions invade the area mostly from the west, while only a small number of them approach from the north direction Nicolaides et al, 2004;Nicolaides, 2005). The present study refers to the investigation of the synoptic, dynamic, thermodynamic and energetic characteristics of the cold frontal depression which entered into the eastern Mediterranean from the north and affected the area of Cyprus during the period from the 28 to 29 January 2008.…”

“…Also, Nicolaides et al (2010b) investigated the synoptic and dynamic characteristics of the depressions which affected the area of Cyprus during the hydrological year 2007-2008 which is the second drier in Cyprus since records are kept (for more than one hundred years). The authors compared the investigated depressions characteristics with those from previous studies and they concluded that the main reason for the low level of accumulated precipitation over Cyprus was the small number of depressions which affected the area during the study period.…”

“…Using thresholds for these indices, thunderstorm events in the above period were characterized as extreme or non-extreme. Orphanou et al (2010) analyzed the monthly statistical characteristics of jetlet and tropopause in relation to the development of thunderstorms over Cyprus for an 11-year period, from 1997 till 2007. Using radiosonde data, the height and the temperature of the tropopause, and the height, wind direction and speed of the jetlet were estimated.…”
