Synovial Chondromatosis

Abstract: Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign condition of unknown etiology in which the synovium undergoes metaplasia leading to cartilaginous nodules that ultimately break free, mineralize, and even ossify. The most commonly involved joint is the knee. Patients may be asymptomatic or may present with pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. Plain radiographs can be diagnostic and mineralized nodules are pathognomonic. Recommended treatment involves arthroscopic or open removal of loose bodies with or without… Show more

“…Patients may be asymptomatic or may present with pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. Recommended treatment involves arthroscopic or open removal of loose bodies with or without a synovectomy to prevent further articular and periarticular destruction and to remove symptoms [1]. Synovial osteochondromatosis is usually diagnosed based on imaging findings because each stage of the disease has a characteristic appearance on X-ray, CT and MRI.…”

“…4 Synovial chondromatosis represents a benign neoplasm presenting as multiple hyaline cartilage nodules in the subsynovial tissue of a joint, tendon sheath or bursa. 5 Initially, investigators speculated whether osteochondromas and synovial osteochondromatosis represented a true neoplastic condition or merely metaplastic or hamartomatous lesions. 1,5 Cytogenetic studies, however, have confirmed the true neoplastic nature of both these two conditions (especially multiple osteochondromas) with constant underlying genetic abnormalities.…”

“…Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare and benign condition characterized by metaplasia of the synovial membrane and formation of cartilaginous or osteochondral loose bodies . SC can occur in joints with pre‐existing diseases, which is referred to as secondary SC, but can also be seen without any pre‐existing joint disease and is referred to as primary SC(Figure ).…”
