Abstract:The histological picture of the synovium in HH arthropathy largely resembles a process reminiscent of OA. Neutrophil invasion is, however, markedly increased in HH arthropathy, especially in joints with iron deposition. Accumulation of neutrophils may be crucial for the production of matrix enzymes, which enables cartilage degradation and more rapidly progressive articular damage.
“…The total area of hemosiderin deposits in the synovial membrane was measured as previously described [7]. Measurements were made using a semi-automatic image analysis software (ImageJ v1.49).…”

HH was associated with an accelerated development of OA in mice. Our findings suggest that synovial iron overload has a definite role in the progression of HH-related OA.

“…In the synovium, deposits of iron have been observed, particularly in the synovial lining cells (6,7,(31)(32)(33). Indeed, deposition here as opposed to in the sublining layers or synovial stroma differentiates between HH and secondary forms of hemochromatosis, such as occurs in thalassemia major (34).…”

“…Deposition may be effectively irreversible and accompanied by slowly progressive chondral resorption, even in subjects who undergo regular venesection (12,32). Iron deposition may itself be seriously detrimental to the joint.…”

“…Тем не менее в другом исследовании было показано, что мАТ к ИЛ1Р (AMG108) оказались эффективными у части пациентов с ОА коленного сустава [193], что связывают с их более мощ-ным и длительным подавлением биологических эффектов ИЛ1 по сравнению с анакинрой. Предполагается также, что ИЛ1 играет более важную роль при некоторых субтипах ОА, например связанном с гемохроматозом [194,195].…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
