Syntactic Analysis of Sentence Adverbials Observed in the Victorian Novel Jane Eyre

Abstract: The sentence structure complexity and clause positioning (Staveley, 2013) represent the striking features of the writing style of the 19-th century British fiction writers. The present syntactic study brings detailed quantitative and qualitative syntactic analyses of peripheral sentence elements, sentence (stance) adverbials, occurring in the Victorian novel Jane Eyre (1847), and offers their classification into style and content disjuncts. As the latter ones are generally employed by fiction in the novels' di… Show more

“…Thematic Roles Past studies in syntactic analyses on literary works prove that the literariness of authors is related to their creativity in exploring the language and style to be expressed in their literary works. Leláková & Belúchová (2020), Deborah &Qomariana (2018), andEfrizah (2019) analyze literary works syntactically. The three researches provide deeper understanding on how adverbials, clauses, and thematic roles appear in different literary works.…”

“…This study aims to analyze the sentence patterns and types of sentences by employing a syntactic analysis since a sentence is the highest unit of syntactic analysis (O'Grady, 2010;Roberts, 1964;Bornstein, 1997). Some studies used syntactic analysis to study sentences and their elements (Agajie, 2020a;Agajie, 2020b;Yasmin, Indrawati, and Rahayuni, 2017;Leláková and Belúchová, 2020). Furthermore, syntax explores the rules of sentence formation (O'Grady, 2010;Radford, 1997;Miller, 2002;Finch, 2005;Andrew, 2006); hence syntactic analysis would be a helping tool for this study.…”
