This paper studies the derivation of multiple nominative constructions (MNC) in Japanese. First, discussing the MNC-sentences in which there is a relation of inalienable possession between nominative noun phrases, I will argue that the set of local economy principles that choose among potentially possible steps at a single stage of a derivation contains a principle that minimizes the size of moved elements. Second, considering the derivation of the MNC-sentences in which there is no relation of inalienable possession between nominative noun phrases, I will show a new piece of evidence for the Merge-over-Move principle.

We take up three Negative Sensitive Items (NSIs) in Japanese, Wh-MO plain negative indefinites, exceptive XP-sika, and certain minimizing indefinites, such as rokuna N ('any decent N'). Although these three NSIs behave differently, we demonstrate that the two traditional NSI categories of Negative Concord Items (NCIs) and Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) are sufficient for characterizing these items. We argue that Wh-MO and XP-sika are NCIs, thus they contain a neg feature ([uneg]) which enters into (upward) agreement with its corresponding an uninterpretable feature ([ineg]). The third NSI, rokuna N, is an NPI. Two issues arise with XP-sika. First, it has an inherent focus feature, which distinguishes it from the other two. Second, this focus feature is syntactically active-meaning that movement is forced-only for the argument XP-sika. We argue that these properties of XP-sika associated with focus are independent of NP-sika as an NSI, and should be dealt with as an overall property of Japanese being a discourse configurational language. We introduce a case-theoretic solution to how focus becomes syntactically active solely with argument XP-sika.

This chapter provides a fresh empirical examination of the interpretations and structures of the focalizing ser (FS) construction in Spanish and the emphatic shi structure in Mandarin Chinese. Its findings support Belletti’s (2004) claim that the TP-internal domain contains a focus projection, similar to what has been argued regarding sentences’ left periphery (CP). We report that these two typologically unrelated languages both allow TP-internal focus projections, before going on to explore the language-specific similarities and differences among various sentences containing ser and shi. Finally, we propose that both ser and shi acquire discourse functions to express focus information in a specific, systematic way.
