Syntheses and a Solid State Structure of a Dinuclear Molybdenum(V) Complex with Pyridine

Abstract: A mononuclear complex [MoOCl4(H2O)]− readily forms a metal−metal bonded {Mo2O4}2+ core. A high content of pyridine in the reaction mixture prevents further aggregation of dinuclear cores into larger clusters and a neutral, dinuclear complex with the [Mo2O4Cl2(Py)4] composition is isolated as a product. Solid state structures of two compounds containing this complex, [Mo2O4Cl2(Py)4]·2.25Py (1) and [Mo2O4Cl2(Py)4]·1.5PyHCl (2), were investigated by X-ray crystallography.

“…Indeed, numerous complexes containing [Mo 2 O 4 ] 2+ centres have been investigated, 26 with bond-distances that are comparable with those obtained from SXRD data of MUV-27-py. 27 The Mo–Mo distances (Table S3 † ) are in the range of 2.547(1)–2.555(1) Å, suggesting a single-bond between the two Mo( v ) atoms. The Mo O linkages exhibit distances in the range of 1.679(8)–1.690(8) Å and the oxo-bridges have the Mo–O distance between 1.917(6) and 1.941(7) Å, which are also in the typical range for other reported [Mo 2 O 4 ] 2+ clusters.…”

Three BTC 3− are coordinated to the [Mo 2 O 4 ] 2+ unit, two of them having an equatorial monodentate coordination mode to each metal, and the third linker is bridging both Mo atoms, in an axial syn , syn bidentate manner.…”

“…Metal complex materials have been to attract the interest of chemists for many years, which may bring both intriguing architectures and promising potential applications in fields such as catalysis, gas storage, magnetics, luminescence materials, and so on [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. In particular, aromatic carboxylic acid ligands play an important role in the construction of metal complex materials by their multiform coordination ways [8][9][10][11][12].…”
