Syntheses, Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of 4,4′‐Bipyridine Bridged Dinuclear MnII and NiII Complexes with the Ligand BMA [BMA = N,N‐bis(benzimidazol‐2‐yl‐methyl)amine]

Abstract: The directed assembly of N,N‐bis(benzimidazol‐2‐yl‐methyl)amine (BMA), 4,4′‐bipyridine (4,4′‐bipy) and NiII or MnII salts resulted in the formation of  the novel compounds [{Ni(BMA)(SCN)2}2]·(μ‐4,4′‐bipy)(DMSO)2 (1) and [{Mn(BMA)(SCN)2}2]·(μ‐4,4′‐bipy) (2), which were characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy and magnetic measurement. The X‐ray single‐crystal analysis reveals that 1 and 2 are discrete dinuclear compounds bridged by 4,4′‐bipy, fu… Show more

“…Several nickel(II) complexes with bis(bbma) have been structurally characterized [9]. To the best of our knowledge, only three nickel(II) complexes of bbma containing picolinate, thiocyanate and dicyandiamide as coligands have been reported [10][11][12]. The title compound consists of a neutral [Ni(bbma)(pht)(H 2 O) 2 ] and two methanol molecules.…”

“…4,4 0 -bpy is used as a rigid spacer in the modular design of coordination networks, [66][67][68][69] but it is known to be a weak transmitter of magnetic interactions, because of (i) large length of the 4,4 0 -bpy bridge, (ii) unfavorable orbital overlap across the bridge, influenced by the torsion angle between the pyridine rings, and (iii) the single C-C bond between the pyridine rings, which suppresses the conjugation of the two halved 4,4 0 -bpy molecules. 70 The importance of the first of these factors should not be overestimated, considering the recent report of measurable magnetic coupling at the CuÁ Á ÁCu distance equal to 22 Å. 71 As can be noticed, the magnetic coupling is generally antiferromagnetic and very weak for 3d ions.…”
