Syntheses of Bi2X3 (X = S, Se, Te) from elements under hydrothermal conditions

Abstract: a b s t r a c tBismuth chalcogenides (Bi 2 X 3 , X = S, Se, Te) were synthesized from the elements under hydrothermal condition. Single phases of Bi 2 S 3 and Bi 2 Se 3 were produced at 240 • C. Bi 2 Te 3 was obtained as an almost single phase with a small amount of Bi 2 TeO 5 . From the results of control experiments without water, the hydrothermal condition in the production of Bi 2 S 3 was more effective than that of Bi 2 Se 3 . The particles of obtained Bi 2 S 3 were spherical, with a diameter of ∼1 m. The… Show more

“…The recent progress in these materials is due to the possibility of enhancing the TE materials and devices efficiency at nano-scale through different approaches. Semiconductor compounds like bismuth telluride (Bi 2 Te 3 ) and other chalcogenides are gaining attention for use in thermoelectric devices and photoconductive materials because of their high TE performance [20][21][22]. However, the need of materials with adequate stability at high temperatures in the presence of high humidity has led to the search for new, and more efficient materials [23].…”

“…Bismuth chalcogenides (Bi 2 X 3 , X = S, Se, Te) are semiconductor compounds that have gained atten-tion for use in photovoltaics, thermoelectric devices, photoconductive materials, and topological insulators [5][6][7]. Bi 2 Se 3 is one of the widely studied material because of its suitable optical properties.…”
