“…[2] Currently, aryl-annulated carbazoles with diverse biological activity have attracted considerable attention in organic chemistry. [3] In particular, aryl-and heteroaryl-annulated[a]carbazoles exhibit a broad range of biological activities such as antitumor [4] and antimicrobial, [5] and are also utilized in the field of materials chemistry as light-emitting diodes [6] and fluorescence reagents. [7] However, most of the reported synthetic methods for this class of compounds require multistep conversions, [3] which restricts efficient structure optimization and their application.…”

“…However, a weak anti-TB activity described for natural 3-formyl-6-methoxycarbazole (40) (MIC 90 = 69 lM) (Ma et al, 2005) could be confirmed. The promising antituberculosis activity of 3-methoxy-2-methylcarbazole-1,4-quinone (4) (Choi et al, 2006) was confirmed as well. Also methyl 6-methoxycarbazole-3-carboxylate (41) exhibited anti-TB activity and was nontoxic for the mammalian cell line.…”

“…Based on the reports of naturally occurring carbazole alkaloids with inhibiting activity against M. tuberculosis (Sunthitikawinsakul et al, 2003;Ma et al, 2005), we started a project to investigate the structure-activity relationships for this class of compounds (Choi et al, 2006). The present study provides further data on the (Table 1).…”

“…It is known that natural origin carbazoles especially for those complex carbazoles fusing with a heterocyclic fragment show well-known pharmacological activities 15,16 . Accordingly, to the present, a large number of natural and synthetic carbazole derivatives have been reported to exhibit diverse biological activities such as antituberculosis 17 , antiproliferative 14 , antibacterial 18,19 , antiviral 20 , antifungal 21,22 , antitumour 23 , anti-inflammatory 24 , antioxidant 12 and antihistaminic activities 25 .…”
