Synthesis and Antioxidant Ability of Novel Derivatives Based on para‐Coumaric Acid Containing Isobornyl Groups

Abstract: A series of novel esters and amides was synthesized on the basis of para‐coumaric acid containing isobornyl groups in ortho‐positions relative to the phenolic hydroxy group. Antioxidant properties of the obtained compounds were evaluated and compared on in vitro models: radical‐scavenging ability, antioxidant activity on a substrate containing the lipids of animal brain, cytotoxicity of red blood cells, antioxidant and membrane‐protective properties on the model of oxidative red blood cells hemolysis. “…Leaf extracts of Zanthoxylum bungeanum showed strong antioxidant effects in a previous study and were attributed to specific polyphenols such as trifolin (31.24 mg/g) [ 41 ]. In our study, p -coumaric acid showed noticeable antioxidant effects, which is in agreement with pervious investigations on other plants [ 42 , 43 ]. Rosmarinic acid antioxidant activities were comparable to antioxidant standards.…”

“…Gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) is a known triphenolic compound that has strong antioxidant activities, as found in this study [ 50 ]. It was found that p -coumaric acid is a strong antioxidant, which is in agreement with previous investigations [ 51 , 52 ]. In L. inermis , moderate antioxidant activities were found, and these were attributed to the polyphenolic composition of leaf extracts including apigenin 5-glucoside.…”

“…To assess the antioxidant potential of the synthesized compounds 2 – 5 , 7a – 12 , we used an already established set of methods [13,15–21,36,37] . Sesamol ( 1 ) and the standard antioxidant BHT (2,6‐di‐ tert ‐butyl‐4‐methylphenol) [38,39] were taken as the most suitable reference compounds.…”

“…It should be noted that often we were unable to identify significant relationships between RSA (DPPH‐test) and the parameters obtained using the above test systems. This fact indicates that the ability to interact with radicals is an important, but not the sole mechanism responsible for the AOA compounds in relation to biomolecules and living cells [18,21] . It is known that, in addition to the role of radical occludents and/or metal chelators, antioxidant molecules, including sesamol ( 1 ), can exhibit surface‐active properties, which allow them to reduce the interfacial tension and create more stable reverse micelles in emulsions [3,40] .…”
