Synthesis and Application of Pillar[n]arene

Abstract: The synthesis, development and application of the new supramolecular host-pillar[n]arene in recent four years are reviewed. Two main synthetic strategies were employed in the synthesis of pillar[n]arene and its derivatives: "firstly cyclization then modification" and "firstly modification then cyclization". Owing to its special conformational structures and physical and chemical properties, pillar[n]arene has been mainly applied to the fields such as host-guest complex and molecular recognition, construction o… Show more

“…However, there are also complex partners for which the cavity of pillar [6]arenes is not wide enough. Fullerene C 60 , for example, can be included only in pillar [10][11][12]arenes. 26 Apart from crystal structure analyses, the proof of complex formation can be obtained, for example, by mass spectrometry (ESI, FAB, FD), UV/Vis spectroscopy (CT bands),…”

“…69 is largely owing to the relatively easy access, the good solubility in organic solvents (for some derivatives even in water) and the manifold complexation capabilities. Until now the majority of the attention has been given to pillar [5]arenes; [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] however, pillar [6]arenes 1 6 exhibit a steadily increasing importance, because of their capability of selective complexations in cases where pillar [5]arenes fail. This property opens the door to novel sensor techniques.…”
