Synthesis and Appraisal of Natural Drug-Polymer-Based Matrices Relevant to the Application of Drug-Eluting Coronary Stent Coatings

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases are becoming a leading cause of death in the world, and attention is being paid to develop natural drug-based treatment to cure heart diseases. Curcumin, ginger, and magnolol are pharmaceutically active in many ways, having properties including anticoagulation, antiproliferation, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant, and may be used to synthesis coatings for drug-eluting stents to treat cardiovascular diseases. In the present investigation, a degradable polymer with varying molecular weig… Show more

“…Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), a herbal plant from the Zingiberaceae family, is one of those plants. It has been used as spice and medicine for treating cancer [1]; cardiovascular disease [2]; diabetes [3]; and several other illnesses such as cold, nausea, asthma, and cough [4]. Owing to the global pandemic of COVID-19, ginger consumption gained more interest.…”

“…Curcumin (CUR, Figure 1 a) and magnolol (MAG, Figure 1 b) have gained increasing interest because of their multiple biological activities (such as antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory) [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Moreover, the two drugs have generated combined therapeutic effects in cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, and neurodegenerative diseases [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. However, CUR shows poor oral absorption mainly because of low aqueous solubility/dissolution (0.96 µg/mL in simulated gastric fluid) [ 8 ].…”

“…The phenomena of increased activity with the increase in drug can be explained in terms of drug content and its release. As explained elsewhere, 11 the morphology of the drug loaded films showed an aggregation of drug content at the surface of the films due to which when drug loaded films interacts with the liquid medium as in case of antioxidant activity, the drug starts to diffuse out of the surface and reacts with the free radicals produced from DPPH. The increase in drug loading in the films, increases the drug aggregation at the surface of the films resulting in increased amount of drug dispensation in the medium producing enhanced activity.…”

“…Subsequently, powdered ginger was soaked in 80% ethanol at placed over magnetic stirrer at medium stirring for about 24 h. Then, the mixture was filtered using what-man no.1 filter paper and supernatant was subjected to evaporation to obtain dry ethanolic extract which was stored in sealed container at room temperature for later use. 11…”
