Synthesis and characterization of 2,2‐bis(methylol)propionic acid dendrimers with different cores and terminal groups

Abstract: Three sets of aliphatic polyester dendrimers based on 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) were synthesized. Two of the sets had benzylidene terminal groups and either a trimethylolpropane or triphenolic core moiety. The last set had acetonide terminal groups and a triphenolic core moiety. Benzylidene-[G#1]-anhydride and acetonide-[G#1]-anhydride were used as the reactive building blocks in the construction of all dendrimers. The large excess of building blocks used in the coupling reactions initially res… Show more

“…[29][30][31][32][33] From this base series of star polymers two additional series of functional stars, with a controlled number of surface groups and different hydrophobic character, have been developed. The original acetonide-functionalized star polymers have a hydrophobic character that, after deprotection, gives hydrophilic, hydroxylfunctionalized stars.…”

“…The large excesses may lead to problems in purifying the product 2. However, divergent approaches to dendronized polymers and related structures, utilizing either benzylidene‐2,2‐bis(methoxy) propanoic anhydride,9, 48, 50–52 or acetonide‐2,2‐bis(methoxy) propanoic anhydride36, 50–53 allows for purification of large excesses of coupling agent by simple extractions 51, 54. The benefit of the “graft‐onto” route is that narrowly distributed dendronized polymers emanating from the same backbone can be produced with ease.…”
