Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Nonlinear Optical Material Mg2Na2ZnB4O10

Abstract: A novel borate compound with the chemical formula Mg 2 Na 2 ZnB 4 O 10 (MNZB) has been synthesized first time from the 2MgO-Na 2 O-ZnO-2B 2 O 3 system via solid-state reaction. The obtained polycrystalline borate material MNZB was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy has been carried out to analyze transmission of the MNZB crystals grown by slow cooling method. The optical b… Show more

“…There is also a B 4 O 10 unit in In 19 B 34 O 74 (OH) 11 , however, which is not isolated but further connected to form a supertetrahedron. It seems that B 4 O 10 units exist in Li 6 CuB 4 O 10 and Mg 2 Na 2 ZnB 4 O 10 ; , however, in both structures, two B 2 O 5 dimers are separated by one central Cu 2+ /Zn 2+ ion to form the CuB 4 O 10 or ZnB 4 O 10 cluster. Because borates are the most important sources for UV NLO materials and the B 4 O 10 cluster here is a fresh one, it is interesting to evaluate these B 4 O 10 clusters’ potential for NLO chromophores.…”
