Synthesis and characterization of a novel magnetic chitosan–nickel ferrite nanocomposite for antibacterial and antioxidant properties

Samira Shokri,
Nabi Shariatifar,
Ebrahim Molaee-Aghaee
et al.

Abstract: A novel nanomagnet modified with nickel ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) coated with hybrid chitosan (Cs–NiFe2O4) was synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The resulting nanomagnets were characterized using various techniques. The size of the nanomagnetic particles was estimated to be about 40 nm based on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) pattern (using the Debye–Scherrer equation). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicated that the surface of C… Show more

“…The suspension was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 h at 500 rpm. Following this, the mixture was centrifuged to separate the resulting brown precipitates (CS@NiFe 2 O 4 NPs), and then rinsed with ethanol and distilled water before being dried at 60 °C for 12 h 41 , 42 . The schematic image of the adsorbent synthesis method is presented in Fig.…”

“…In the CG11Ni sample, none of the peaks ascribed to chitosan are visible. This can be justified by the disruption of the well-crystalline linear structure of chitosan due to interaction with various monomers since amine and hydroxyl groups on the polymeric structure of chitosan interact non-covalently with nanoparticles [42]. However, the five narrow peaks observed can be assigned to NiFe 2 O 4 , in agreement with the ICDD 04-014-8286 [43].…”

“…2 C). This phenomenon can be attributed to the presence of additional materials in the nanocomposite, which can alter the magnetic properties of Fe 3 O 4 35 . It is worth noting that magnetic nanocomposites have potential applications as adsorbents for removing toxic agents from aqueous solutions due to their high surface-to-volume ratio, water repellency, fast diffusion, and super-magnetism 51 , 52 .…”
