Synthesis and characterization of aliphatic polyesters from glycerol, by-product of biodiesel production, and adipic acid

Abstract: In the present work, polyesters were prepared from the polycondensation between glycerol and adipic acid using dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst. Three glycerol: adipic acid molar ratio were used for the bulk polymerization namely: 2:2; 2:3 and 2:4. FTIR confirmed the esterification of glycerol by the acid for all the polymers. DSC and XRD indicated no crystallinity for all the polymers. The morphology of the materials are characterized by globular structure, which may suggest compositional fluctuations through… Show more

“…FTIR spectra in absorbance mode showed peaks in the 2950 to 2855 cm -1 region, indicating C-H elongation vibration of citric acid (Brioude et al 2007). With both wood species, higher intensities were observed in the middle of the specimens (half thickness) than on outer faces.…”

“…Glycerol have also shown potential as a high-boiling-point organic solvent to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass during atmospheric autocatalytic organosolvent pre-treatment [52]. Synthesis of aliphatic polyesters from glycerol by reacting it with adipic acid (Scheme 7) is also reported elsewhere [53].…”

“…Due to its good compatibility, glycerol is widely used as plasticizer for starch films. Additionally, glycerol improves processing and the flexibility of films 17,18 . This work establishes biotechnological strategies for the use of purified glycerol from biodiesel production with the intention to open future perspectives for plastic industries 8,18,19 .…”
