Synthesis and Characterization of All Renewable Resources Based Branched Polyester: Poly(2,5-furandicarboxylic acid-co-glycerol)

Abstract: Condensation of all renewable resources based monomers 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and glycerol in the presence of 2 mol% Sb2O3catalyst at 210°C gives a branched polyester resin in 70% yield. This resin was characterized by elemental analysis,1H,13C NMR, FT-IR, and TGA-DTG.

“…2,5‐Furandicarboxylic acid (H 2 FDCA), a member of the furan family, is symmetric dicarboxylic acids obtained from oxidation both primary alcohol and aldehyde groups of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) . H 2 FDCA is a biomass derived product and considered one of the promising monomers for the synthesis of polyesters, polyamides and polyurethanes .…”

“…2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (H 2 FDCA), a member of the furan family, is symmetric dicarboxylic acids obtained from oxidation both primary alcohol and aldehyde groups of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). [1,2] H 2 FDCA is a biomass derived product and considered one of the promising monomers for the synthesis of polyesters, polyamides and polyurethanes. [3,4] According to the aromatic structure and biologically based origin, the H 2 FDCA can be regarded as an excellent substitute for fossil fuel based monomers such as terephthalic acid (TPA).…”

“…FDCA and its derivatives have been used to prepare other polymers or resins, such as polyamides, thermotropic polyesters, photodegraded polyesters, branched furanic polyester resins, linear and cross‐linked poly(ester amide), epoxy resins, and poly(ester urethanes) . For polyamides, Mitiakoudis and Gandini synthesized and characterized polyamides from FDCA and aromatic diamines .…”

“…The synthesis of novel polymeric materials from renewable natural resources has become a fast growing area as these renewable polymers could potentially replace a number of petro chemically derived polymers, relieving from the dependence on fossil resources . In attempts to develop this new generation of materials, a number research groups have studied a wide range of structurally diverse renewable resources‐based compounds such as triglycerides, lactic acid, furfural, 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural or its derivatives, levulinic acid, and succinic acid as potential monomers or feedstocks. The aromatic renewables is a relatively less explored subgroup in biomass‐based feedstock chemicals.…”
