Synthesis and characterization of calcium alginate and cellulose nanocrystal films for lead removal

Abstract: The contamination of water with lead (Pb) is a society concern since this metal as a toxic cation. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are rod-like structures with variable size, which are prepared by acid hydrolysis of cellulose natural sources, so it is a renewable, biodegradable material, with good mechanical performance. Sodium alginate (SA) is a biopolymer, biodegradable and renewable. This biopolymer can chelate bivalent cations forming gel networks. This work focuses on the combination of these two natural bio… Show more

“…The C1s peak at ∼284–288 eV can be deconvoluted in C–H, C–O and OC–O functional groups, whilst the deconvolution of the O1s peak ∼532–533 eV comprises the CO and C–O signals. 33,34 These C1s and O1s peaks overlap the expected peaks found for C and O functional groups in MS and GOPEI. The N1s peak at ∼401 eV can be deconvoluted into –NH 2 , CN and C–N functional groups from the MS and GOPEI.…”

“…Calcium alginate (Alg) sample shows the characteristic peaks of –COO (symmetric and asymmetric stretching at ∼1584 cm −1 and ∼1408 cm −1 respectively), a C–O stretching vibration peak at ∼1285 cm −1 , a broad peak centered at ∼1012 cm −1 that corresponds to C–O, C–C and C–O–C stretching vibration and a small peak at ∼809 cm −1 that can be assigned to the C–H deformation vibration of the phenyl ring. 33,34,45 Sample MSGOPEI3–Alg as a very similar FTIR pattern as sample Alg, where the MS and GOPEI peaks are overlapped.…”
