“…Besides, the splitting energy of 18.3 eV between m 1 and n 1 suggests the existence of CeO 2. Also, the peak appearances of m 2 / n 2 (907.4/888.1 eV) and m 3 / m 3 (916.3/897.8 eV) are the characteristic peaks of Ce 4+ ions . This result also confirmed the successful synthesis of CuO/CeO 2 catalyst.…”

“…By the third method, metal decoration, two mechanisms can be involved to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 : (I) replacement of  4 Ti in TiO 2 lattice by metals which results in a narrow band gap or (II) the use of noble metals to facilitate the electron transfer from TiO 2 to noble metals [15]. In comparison to the studies involving noble metals, transition metal ions and non-metal doped TiO 2 photocatalysts, there is a limited amount of reports about the use of rare-earth metals as dopants, such as, Cerium [16,17]. The improved photocatalytic activity of (rare-earth metals)-TiO 2 has been related to a decrease of the electron-hole recombination rate through electron capture by the incompletely occupied 4f and empty 5d orbitals of rare-earth metals.…”

“…For 2% and 3% samples, the wavenumber is red shifted to the visible-light region, and the absorption intensity aslo increases. It shows the enhancement of the charge moving between the conduction band and the valence band of TiO 2 and CeO 2 [22]. Moreover, the wavenumber of excess Cd loading (4%) is similar to Ce 0.2 TiO x samples.…”
