Synthesis and characterization of cerium oxide by electrochemical methods

Abstract: Ceria‐based materials have been synthesized by electrochemical process. Electrodeposition is an interesting cheap method which can be performed at ambient pressure and rather low temperature (less than 100 °C). Moreover, it is easy to control in situ the film thickness. Ceria coatings were obtained by an indirect electrodeposition method. A potentiostatic technique (–0.7 V/SCE) was used to first reduce a hydroxide precursor (O2 or NO3–) before leading to the formation of cerium oxide after 2h of deposition tim… Show more

“…From the relaxation frequency of the high frequency contribution, a dielectric constant equal to 2 was calculated. As reported in literature, such value was characteristic of ceria, for bulk [65], even when deposited in aqueous media [28].…”

“…It could however be noticed that this activation energy was slightly higher than the one observed for sintered materials, more often close to 0.9 eV, as already observed [28]. From the relaxation frequency of the high frequency contribution, a dielectric constant equal to 2 was calculated.…”

“…Here, fabricating a properly rough CeO 2 nanostructure is the key for the superhydrophobic surface as the electrodeposition of CeO 2 involves a series of processes, such as the formation of Ce(OH) 3 and then its conversion to CeO 2 by oxygen according to the proposed mechanism . The detailed reaction mechanism can be summarized by the following equations , Also, the morphology of the deposition can be controlled by the current density and electrodeposition time due to their important influence on the nucleation growth of the crystal. , Therefore, the effect of current density on the morphology was investigated first at an electrodeposition time of 20 min.…”

“…Rare earth oxides of ceria are a widely accepted photocatalyst and has been researched for a long time [31]. Cerium Oxide (CeO 2) nanoparticles can be synthesized in multiple ways, which primarily includes electrochemical [32], chemical reduction [33], microemulsion [34], microwave [35], and hydrothermal [36,37], etc. Some of these methods uses carcinogenic chemical compounds and have complex reaction conditions.…”
