A comparison has been made between ceramic microfiltration membranes of the same composition obtained by pressing and by extrusion in terms of microstructure and properties.The extruded membranes displayed lower porosity and smaller pore size than pressed membranes. The higher the clay content in the starting composition, the clearer this tendency became. In contrast, the difference tended to disappear when starch was added to the initial composition. The mechanical strength values followed a decreasing exponential variation with porosity, which was influenced by the starting composition and the shaping method.Water permeability reflected the strong effect of the mean pore size. The membranes synthesised from the composition with the higher clay content showed the lowest permeability, while those obtained from the composition including starch showed the highest value. A model derived from the Hagen-Poiseuille equation enabled the tortuosity values to be calculated.

The effect of excess MgO mole ratio on the sintering behavior of cordierite ceramic was studied using XRD and SEM. The green bodies were sintered at 1100–1300°C by solid‐state method. The excess MgO did not obviously reduce the crystallization temperature but increased the production of liquid and densification. This effect has to be activated by a specific temperature. The starting material had little influence on the crystallization phase at 1200°C or higher. As basic magnesium carbonate can also be used as a pore‐forming agent, the shrinkage and porosity approached maximum value at 3.4 mole ratio of MgO.

Clay of the Middle Atlas Mountains region, Morocco, was used to investigate the removal of heavy metals ions (Cadmium and Copper) from aqueous solutions with respect to several experimental conditions including pH, contact time, initial solute concentrations, temperature and ionic strength. Kinetic study revealed that metal ions uptake was fast with 90% or more of the adsorption occurring within first 30 min of contact time. Adsorption rate increased with the increasing initial metal ions concentrations and the sorption rate was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order rate model. The data according to mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion models confirmed diffusion of solutes inside the clay particles as the ratecontrolling step and more important for the adsorption rate than the external mass transfer.The suitability of the adsorbent was tested by fitting the adsorption data with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Equilibrium and kinetic adsorption data showed that clay displays a high selectivity with an affinity order of Cd > Cu. Thermodynamic parameters including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) changes indicated that the present adsorption process was feasible and endothermic in the temperature range of 25-45 °C.
