Synthesis and Characterization of Electrospun Carbon Quantum Dots – Polyacrylonitrile/Polycaprolactone Composite Nanofiber Membranes for Copper (II) Adsorption

Abstract: Heavy metal adsorption (HMA) is one of the remediation techniques used to remove heavy metals from water/wastewater. Composite membranes with functionalized additives for selective adsorption are being investigated. In this study, Carbon Quantum Dots – Polyacrylonitrile/Polycaprolactone nanocomposite membranes are synthesized by electrospinning which is intended for HMA of Cu2+. The nanofiber mats were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and Contact Angle. Batch adsorption process were performed and to utilize the … Show more

“…One of the purification methods for removing heavy metals from wastewater is heavy metal adsorption (HMA). 72 Composite membranes containing functionalized additives for the adsorption of particular ions are useful in this regard. The electrospinning technique was used to fabricate carbon quantum-dot-polyacrylonitrile/polycaprolactone (CQD-PAN/ PCL) nanofibrous membranes, suitable for Cu 2+ HMA.…”

“…The electrospinning technique was used to fabricate carbon quantum-dot-polyacrylonitrile/polycaprolactone (CQD-PAN/ PCL) nanofibrous membranes, suitable for Cu 2+ HMA. 72 Firstly, CQDs were synthesized using a hydrothermal method and were then loaded into PAN/PCL at a 4 wt% concentration. The diameter of the CQD composite nanofibers was slightly increased, forming a uniformly distributed fibrous network.…”

“…CQD in PAN and PAN/PCL membrane magnified the fiber size distribution from 50-100 nm to 150-250 nm, increasing the hydrophilicity of the PAN/PCL membrane. The physical adsorption method, which involves VDW forces and hydrogen bonds between adsorbent and adsorbate, governs the adsorption behavior [132].…”
