Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite from Green Mussel Shell with Sol-Gel Method

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a major component of bones and teeth. HAp is widely used to repair, fill, extend, and reconstruct damaged bone tissue. HAp is used for bone and dental implants, so it is necessary to synthesize HAp. HAp synthesis can utilize green mussel shell waste as a calcium precursor. This research synthesized HAp from a green mussel shell using the sol-gel method. The controlled synthesis parameter was pH, and the variable being compared was the heating temperature at 900 and 1100 °C. The HAp prod… Show more

“…In Figure 1 Calcination also plays a crucial role in removing organic compounds and impurities that may hinder the formation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) [15]. Consequently, after the calcination process, the eggshell is expected to be converted into CaO, reducing the sample's mass [16].…”

“…Hydroxyapatites, chemically represented as Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, play a vital role in the composition of mammalian hard tissues [37] and exist in natural phosphate mineral deposits [38]. Hydroxyapatites can be sourced from natural materials such as mammalian bones, shells, fish scales, and minerals [39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46]. Their crystal structure possesses two distinct planes [47,48].…”

“…A variety of methods have been used to get HAp, such as precipitation (Rizkayanti and Yusuf, 2019), microwave irradiation (Castro, et al 2022), reflux method (Cahyanto, et al 2017), heat treatment (Lolo, et.al. 2022), interfacial reaction with multiple emulsion, Solid-state syntesis (Khalid and Chaudhry, 2020) cationic surfactant template (Yusuf, et al 2019), sol-gel (Charlena, et al 2022), etc, Heat treatment known as the simplest and cheapest method because there is no need to mix additional sources to obtain HAp (Sunil & Jagannatham, 2016).…”
