Synthesis and characterization of maghemite iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3) nanofibers: novel semiconductor with magnetic feature

Abstract: Among the reported nanostructural shapes, nanofibers have special interest due to the long axial ratio which has a distinct impact on many chemical and physical properties. In this study, synthesis of the desirable maghemite iron oxide (c-Fe 2 O 3 ) nanofibers is introduced. Calcination of electrospun mats composed of ferrous acetate and poly(vinyl alcohol) in argon atmosphere resulted in producing maghemite nanofibers. Detailed characterization affirmed that the obtained c-Fe 2 O 3 nanofibers are free of othe… Show more

“…Magnetite can be semi-conductive in certain conditions with a small bandgap of the order of 0.1 eV [ 110 , 111 , 112 ]. In addition, the semiconducting property of maghemite detected in carbon steel samples exposed to each of the fruit juices is well known [ 113 , 114 ]. Surface oxides present on corroding metal surfaces are known to influence corrosion processes particularly when they are semiconducting [ 115 ].…”

“…Sodium borohydride was then added to the mats to reduce the ferric ions to IONPs. Another example of post‐treatment nanocomposite fabrication is the work of Barakat who prepared nanofibers from a solution of PVA and Iron(II) acetate (FeAc) . The nanofiber mats were dried for 24 h before undergoing calcination at 700°C for 5 h in an argon atmosphere to form IONPs.…”
