Synthesis and characterization of new fluorinated aromatic polyesters containing trifluoromethylphenoxy pendant groups

Abstract: A series of novel fluorinated aromatic polyesters containing trifluoromethylphenoxy pendant groups was synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of 2-(4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)terephthalyl chloride with various bisphenols in dichloromethane. The polyesters obtained in good yields had weight-average molecular weights of 70,600-29,800 g/mol, polydispersities of 1.81-2.08, and were all amorphous. All polyesters were easily soluble in organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, o-chloropheno… Show more

“…To overcome these shortcomings, researchers have developed various approaches to obtain thermally stable and organic-soluble fully aromatic polyesters. These approaches included the introduction of bulky pendant groups, nonsymmetric groups, hyperbranched structure, trifluoromethyl groups, functional groups, and flexible chains into the polymer backbone and so on.…”

“…A number of fluorinated polymers of different types, including tetrafluoroethylene- and vinylidenefluoride-based polymers, acrylates/methacrylates, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyethers, and polyamides have been synthesized by radical polymerization and polycondensation. , The fluorinated polymers exhibit a range of outstanding properties, including chemical resistance, thermal and photochemical stability, and low-reflective index, and low surface energy/adhesion. ,, The polymers also possess good mechanical properties; however, with a few exceptions (e.g., PTFE and polyvinylidenefluoride), the higher cost of these polymers and/or their mechanical properties often prevents their widespread applications as bulk materials in practical applications.…”
