Synthesis and Characterization of New Refractory Coatings Based on Talc, Cordierite, Zircon and Mullite Fillers for Lost Foam Casting Process

Abstract: Refractory coatings based on different refractory fillers (talc, cordierite, zircon and mullite) for application in Lost Foam casting process were investigated. Design and optimization of the coatings composition with controlled, rheological properties included, and consequently synthesis were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and fillers and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Morphologic and microstructural analysis of fillers was carri… Show more

“…The main characteristic of the LFC process is that patterns made of polymers remain in the cast until the molten liquid metal is introduced. Contact with liquid metal causes intensive decomposition of the polymer pattern, which evaporates over a relatively short time simultaneously with metal crystallization (Prstić et al, 2014). During the process, the decomposed liquid products are pushed toward the molding cavity upper surface, then the liquid metal front.…”

“…The pattern density and permeability of the refractory coating and sandy cast determine polymer evaporation velocity. In order to achieve desired quality and predicted characteristics of a part, critical process parameters and the type of alloy for casting should be determined for each particular pattern material (Prstić et al, 2014). Among the advantages of LFC, the following can be listed (Fan et al, 2014):…”

“…Based on the results of research on various types of material it is known that the coating produced has different rheological results that affect the surface results of the castings. Each material has its own characteristics, but further research is needed to get a coating with good quality with economic wise [7].…”
