Synthesis and characterization of novel aromatic polyimides from 4,4-bis(p-aminophenoxymethyl)- 1-cyclohexene

Abstract: A novel diamine, 4,4‐bis(p‐aminophenoxymethyl)‐1‐cyclohexene (CHEDA), was synthesized from 4,4‐bis(hydroxymethyl)‐1‐cyclohexene and p‐chloronitrobenzene by nucleophilic aromatic substitution and subsequent catalytic reduction of the intermediate dinitro compound. A series of aromatic polyimides were prepared from CHEDA and commercial dianhydrides with varying flexibility and electronic character in two‐step direct polycondensation reactions. High molecular weight polyimides with intrinsic viscosities between 0… Show more

“…The second weight loss around 300°C is due to the decomposition of the triethylammonium sulfonate groups. The third stage weight loss around 450°C13 is assigned to the decomposition of polymer main chain. The char yields of all the polymers in nitrogen are above 45% even at 700°C.…”

“…19 Adamantane-containing polymer P A 3 showed the highest Td10 since adamantane is generally recognized as a highly thermally stable unit. 9 Table II, it shows PA 3 to exhibit higher Td10 than Ref2.…”

“…Therefore, much research effort has been directed at improving their processability and solubility by structural modification without compromising their other desired properties. One of the most common approaches to increase solubility is the introduction of flexible linkages in the polymer backbone and/or bulky pendent groups along the main chain 2–8. Introducing pendent loops into the polymer backbone is a successful approach for improving the processability of aromatic polyamide without an extreme loss of their outstanding properties 9.…”
